TRD Tach/White Face Guages Install

tach-comparison.JPG (53876 bytes)

Ok this is about how you would install a TRD tach, or white face guages.   Since both require more or less the same amount f work I will go over what to do.   I installed a TRD tach, but the procedure is almost identical since you gotta pull off all the same parts.

Tools:   philips screwdriver, short and medium length.   flat head scredriver -- small/medium size

Parts #'s:    Plastic Guage Cover Part #  83138-1B270     (does not have to be replaced)

Ok what needs to be done is simple, you need to pull the dash apart or off and get to the main guage cluster, there is the top panel that needs to be removed (just like instruction in doing a boost guage section) you need to pull the 5 philips head screws up top. Pull that piece down.  Pull the ring clip that goes around the guage cluster, it snaps off.  The Right and Left panels may need to be pulled off, for each R and L panel there is 1 screw at the upper top which needs to be removed then, the panel just snaps off by hand.  You must unplug the electronic harness's to fully remove the panel from the car.

Once you are at the guage cluster there are 4 screws (if I remember correctly) that hold the guage cluster in.

trd-tach-upper-screws.JPG (24795 bytes) 2 screws at either side of the guage cluster on the top.

After removing the 4 screws you will pull the guage cluster assembly, there are 3 wire harness's that you will pull off the guage cluster, the below picture shows where they plug in.  Also the main wiring harness will be electrical taped to the brown clip that is shown below.  just push this harness off the clip and pull the guage cluster.

Remove the plastic cover panel that covers the guage cluster.  Shown below.   You can do this by hand or use a screwdriver carefully to press in the tabs and remove the plastic panel.  Go around the cluster in a circle loosening and poping the tabs in, then remove the plastic panel.  There are 10-11 tabs for the clear section.   Be careful as to not disturb the dials for the fuel and coolant temp. they are set at a specific setting as you can see in the picture, recommended that you write down what their settings are before you pull the plastic cover off in case you do disturb the dials.

Once you remove the clear plastic panel.  Remove the black panel that surrounds the guages in the same manner as you did the plastic panel, once you get to this part be carful not to disturb the dials of the fuel and coolant temp.

This is what the cluster looks with no plastic surrounding it. (picture above)

Here is a picture of the TRD Tach replacement, if you'd like to see more close up pictures from behind and so forth click here

At this point you need to remove the center portion to be able to install the TRD replacement.  Remove the 3 philips head screws that are circled in Yellow below.   They hold the Stock Tach and the TRD tach in place.

Once you remove the scres the Stock tach will come right out.

At this point you need to take the TRD tach, remove the 1 screw that comes with it that is already screwed into the back of it, this screws is shorter you will not be able to use this screw because it is to short, take the TRD tach and place it on the guage cluster the way the Stock tach was.  Screw in the 3 stock screws just like the stock tach was and your all done.

Go ahead and snap the black plastic panel back on, then the clear panel back on.   Replace in the car, make sure that you plug all 3 harness's back in and screw the unit back into the car with the 4 screws you removed earlier.

To date I have been unable to get a really good picture with the lights on of the TRD tach, any picture I have taken has not done this Tach justice, so I will keep trying to take pictures, but take my word on it, if you really want this thing and am not sure if it looks good or will match it definetely does so you don't have to worry about that.   Also as of 10/10/99  I have installed 2 of these things and they both were identical and both looked perfect.
